El orden público ante la libertad religiosa. Reflexiones sobre un debate

2020

EnglishThe political history of Alfonsus V the Magnan…

Agrarian Elites and types of Caciquism. The Rafal/Vía Manuel Family from the Crisis of Absolutism to the Crisis of the Restoration Regime

1998

This article seeks to explore the usefulness of a social history of politics. The authors study the different heritage and political strategies of several noble familie…

The Abortion Act 1967: A fundamental change?

2014

DOI: 10.1057/9781137374103\₄; International audience; In the 1960s, Great Britain underwent a series of profound changes in both social and cultural terms. For some, these changes were the result of a growth in liberal values and individual freedom, while critics saw this as the rise of a permissiveness which was destroying national values and morals. Politicians’ sexual peccadilloes were now being revealed, while satirical publications and television programmes were daring to challenge and ridicule both politicians and the Establishment, a thing previously unheard of, just not quite the done thing. The ‘Celtic fringe’ was making its voice heard far more, either through civil rights demonst…

Ausencias relevantes en la teoria del curriculum.

2020

Some significant absences are pointed out in the article about the way in which the theory has been confronting the curriculum, with special emphasis on what happene…

Kinship between cities and peoples

2012

As Herodotus explains (8.144.2), the whole Greek-speaking people was envisaged like one big “family” composed of kinsmen. Nevertheless, within this wide “family” there were various degrees of blood relationship due to the ancestral subdivision of the Hellenic people into the early gene of Aiolians, Ionians, and Dorians. Keywords: ancient Greece; assimilation and exclusion; cultural history; Greek history; nations and peoples; political history

Ethnic or Socio-Economic Conflict? Political Interpretations of the Rwandan Crisis

1996

AbstractRather than trace the political history of the conflict in Rwanda I will focus on the different interpretations of the conflict by the actors involved. The external identification of the Tutsi refugees as 'Banyarwanda' corresponds with the ideology and self image of the RPF who were recruited among the refugees and their descendants who fled to Uganda during and after 1959. The RPF presents itself as a democratic organisation speaking for all Rwandans and its anti-ethnic stance is designed not only to appeal to Rwandans but also to a Western audience. The RPF's opponent, the Habyarimana government in Rwanda, presented itself as the heir of the 1959 'peasant revolution' which had rep…

L'histoire des politiques culturelles des villes

1997

The history of cities' cultural policies, Philippe Poivrier. At the crossroads of the renewal of political history and cultural history, a new research area has been open to historians after a heavy occupation of the land by sociologists and political scientists. The article goes into the methodological stakes that accompany the examination of this public treatment of culture. A new approach of the social stakes of our societies could take effect, by giving to contemporary history a goal that has not been very much in evidence until now: the well-argued study of locality.

2006

This essay aims to contribute to the process of rethinking thirty years of Italian history. These long thirty years began with the 1968 student movement and the workers’ movement in the factories of Northern Italy in the “hot autumn” of 1969, then saw the cross-fertilization of the feminist movement and the battles for civil rights (divorce and abortion), and ended with terrorism and its repression, leading to an estrangement between politics and civil society and, in particular, to women’s drastic disaffection from politics. In considering these themes Italian historiography has recently been seeking to try to understand the “anomalies” of the Italian case and of the country’s contradictor…

GOLD MINING AND JULA INFLUENCE IN PRECOLONIAL SOUTHERN BURKINA FASO

2007

ABSTRACTThe ‘Lobi’ region in what is today southern Burkina Faso is frequently mentioned in historical accounts of gold mining in West Africa. However, little is known about the actual location of the gold mines or about the way gold mining and trade were organized in precolonial times. This article points out that some previous hypotheses about precolonial gold mining, trade and the sociopolitical organization of this region are flawed, partly because ‘Lobi’, as the name for both the region and its inhabitants, is misleading. In fact, the references to ‘Lobi’ merge two distinct gold-producing zones along the Mouhoun river, about 200 km from each other. The present-day populations of southe…
